Internet, E-Commerce & the Common Man

Today I will write on something that lies very close to my heart and also my work field. I was just thinking of the amazing changes that the world has seen after the coming of the internet. Just imagine 20 years back the situation how will you be booking your bus ticket if you want to travel. You will be going to the booking agent of the concerned company, tell him where you want to go. He tells you the price and you book the ticket. Imaging the scenario now….You have many buses offering you the service. You check the internet for the price, check if there is some other firm offering you a better price and book the ticket online without going through the hassle of visiting the office. Isn’t that amazing?

You can pay online/transact business online/keep in touch with friends online/buy your insurance online/buy your latest CD/DVD online/keep track of the new technology that is coming online/check the latest gossip in the world of sport & entertainment/online trading of shares & mutual funds. The array goes on and on. What is that the consumer learns from having internet is they have a choice. (I have something to say more on the rattle ‘consumer is the king’ but I will reserve that for a later blog) They have a choice to decide on what they want and how they want it. I will quote a simple example out here. If you want ‘Reservoir Dogs’ DVD, you can log in to www.kelkoo.co.uk or www.pricerunner.co.uk and check for the online prices of the various websites offering the DVD, check which one of those gives you the cheapest price and buy the same. Imaging the days where in you had one shop of buying the cassette in the price that is quoted.

Internet has definitely made life simple in many ways. And hopefully it will do so in the days to come.

Sriram,

Fortunately the age of 'Matrix' has not come. The systems are as of now designed by human beings and as human beings are flawed the systems designed by them are also flawed with its own inherent mistakes and limitations. I guess you should not be flawing the technology the enabled a human being to build it but rather his limitation to understand the technology that is there before him for his understanding & use.

I do agree with you on you saying that we have become overtly dependent on it, which in all practical purposes is wrong. There should be an amount of independence that we should have from system.

The decision on whether to depend on technology or not should lie with individual human being. And his intelligence will prove that.

I had talked about some of the upsides of being in this information tech. world. But there are some downsides too. And also about the famous 'customer is the king' rant. is that really the case. a blog will follow & then we can discuss on it.
