Please and Thank You

One thing I have noticed after coming to the UK is the repeated usage of Please and Thank You in every conversation. What I sometimes wonder is whether they are used due to courtesy, sincerity or Just for the heck of it. Do people really mean it when they use the word ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’? I really don’t think so. I have always felt people use it just because they are taught to use it. And what does that effectively mean. Those important words just lose their inherent charm, their purpose. What is really the purpose of using them if they are not really meant? Not meant to be rude to people who really mean it. Just a thought that is there in my mind.

Hey mate

I think its used to be polite and because people are expecting it, even if the use of it is done because its been ingrained in us.

I do get annoyed when I hold open a door for someone and they say nothing - just quite rude to be fair and isn't acknowleding.

I do appreciate the fact that it is meant to be polite and courteous. Sometimes i have felt that it is not meant, but rather said without meaning it. That is what annoys me and not the courtesy or politeness intended. If someone does not intend to say 'thanks' or 'pls', why say it at all? my apologies it i am being controversial. I have felt it sometimes...just a thought....And trust me even i am using it a lot now a days on every given occasion because i respect the courtesy aspect.
