Sounds quite philosophical but here is my view, although in honesty might not be what you mean....
When you learn to ride a bike, sometimes you need someone behind you holding it so you don't fall over. Other times you may see someone in front of you encouraging you on. At other times its just good to have someone at your side who is quickly there when in need but is not interfering....
Dunno - first thought that came to mind when I read it.
