The west has seen the rising of different super market stores which have become the major mode of shopping for an average user. This phenomenon is not widely prevalent India. Generally Indians have relied on vegetable markets, small vendors, corner shops for making their day to day grocery purchases.
May be that will all change. A new dynamic in the hugely profitable Indian retain segment - Reliance Fresh.
Its first store has been opened in Hyderabad, an offering from the Ambani's. With the huge cash kitty that ambani's have, you will be able to see aggressive pricing to get a market share. Also there are many other majors now planning to enter into the retail segment. How will this scenario work out in the future? Will the smaller shops survive the onslaught of super market chains? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure Reliance does have the first mover advantage.
