American Senate keeps the right of Americans to burn America's flag as a show of protest

I am not really sure how to take this news. Should I think that Americans are stupid that they allow their flag to be burnt by scrupulous elements who don't understand the meaning of pride in one's nations or Should I think of America as a great nation that allows individual freedom that allows him to show one's protest or disgust even if it means buring one's own country's flag. Read the news here.

I will leave for the readers of this blog to make up its own mind. I know for sure that in India no individual/organisation could hoist our national flag. A law was passed after struggle by Navin Jindal (who is at present member of parliament) to allow individuals or organizations to fly own's national flag as long as you don't show apathy towards it.

Personally I do think that any person can show his disgust by various other means other than showing dis-respect to your flag. End of the day, It is generally the individuals governing the nation that take wrong/doubtful decisions and not the nation itself. The one person who needs to suffer for the act is the individual himselves. I am sure there will be many who disagree. Comments welcome.
